| Open doors at the Dunblain School! |
The Dunblaine school, a school based in Toronto focusing on children with special needs, was having its open doors on Thursday, February 7, 2013. The teachers welcomed representatives from different institutions of Ontario, all specialized in learning disabilities and developmental handicaps.
The event started off with presentations by the students from the senior grades about what the school meant to them. With the help of a program they had attended at the school called Now You're Talking they did great presentations, being mindful of their body postures, the ton of their voices and making sure to make eye contact all along their presentations. Now You're Talking, a series of workshops meant to help children develop presentation skills, introduces the students to the fine art of communication and social interactions. Such workshops are particularly helpful and appreciated by students living with autism as a way for them to follow a set of rules and guidelines that are very practical, make sense to them and allow them to feel more confident when expressing themselves. We know how important early interactions in life are and how crucial the school years are in the development of children. During these years when the children builds their own personality, being able to express one's opinions, emotions, and thoughts is certainly key. Also, being able to communicate is certainly a great skill to master or at least to feel confident in, since communication is helpful all life long, later on at the work place, but also in every day life situations. Now You're Talking is one of the many programs the school has implemented to meet as closely as possible the needs of its students.
The attendees were then offered to visit the school and refreshments were served, as an opportunity to chat, connect and learn more about the school.
